If you are thinking that summer vacation will mean a staycation to follow school-at-home, work-from-home, stay-at-home spring, there is some good news. A New England getaway may be a solid solution in this uncertain time with small towns and small crowds, but plenty of diversions far from the madding crowd. Bed and Breakfast accommodations like The Homestead in Madison, Connecticut keep everything from social interactions to hyper-housekeeping manageable.

American Vacation Classic 2020

This is a road-trip year. Airlines have cut flights drastically and besides that it requires traveling with all those people in a tube. Instead, head for the Shoreline of Connecticut. What you will find are beautiful beaches, some ponds too; small towns that still hug a village green and ooze charm; lots of history in open air and tucked away spots; and spirited communities that somehow mix long-settled custom with the refined dining, drinking and main street gamboling required by the most demanding New York refugee. Madison is just such a place and an easy drive from Boston or New York.

The Homestead Madison

It is also a good year to book B&B style lodging. Aside from feeling good about supporting small independent businesses, these accommodations naturally contain the number of guests, and can quite often allow a single family or group of friends to be the sole occupants in residence. The Homestead went on hiatus in late winter and will re-open with new options designed with the social-distanced, managed-contact, responsible travel in mind. The house sits well back from the road, shielded by stands of trees; it is just the right measure of isolation for the times.

The bed and breakfast has just 10 rooms to accommodate up to 16 people. The common areas include a gracious living room, dining room, and sunroom on the inside with multiple decks and fire pits outside. Each bedroom with private bath is generous, with enough room to comfortably enjoy some private, or socially distant time. There is even a small beauty salon on property which is a great amenity if your group is a wedding party.

Surf Club beach is an easy walk from The Homestead and the beaches of Hammonasset Beach State Park are a 10-minute drive. The heart of Madison is an easy pedal (by complimentary bike) from the property, and you can either enjoy the Main Street charm or grab a picnic for the beach. The area has plenty of options for kayaking on the rivers and salt marshes, hiking or enjoying summer games on this less trafficked stretch of New England coast.
